Living in Dorchester County, South Carolina

 

While it is just a quick 25 minute drive to downtown Charleston, Dorchester County provides some of the best options for outdoor activities. For example, there is an abundance of hiking trails in the local parks, Rosebrock Park and Givhans Ferry State Park. If you’re looking for ways to exercise while taking in a scenic view, Dorchester County offers many cycling trails and golf courses for you to get the best of both worlds! 

 

If you enjoy kayaking or simply floating down the river, you’re in luck because Dorchester County is home to one of the longest free-flowing rivers in North America, the Edisto River. 

 

Growing Communities in Dorchester County

 

Dorchester County ranges from rural to urban areas, and there are several growing communities that you may want to join. 

 

  • North Charleston is partly located in Dorchester County, and it is home to about 80,000 people. It is the largest community in the county and has a large sports center named the North Charleston Coliseum, the new LaFrance Fire Museum and Educational Center and a beautiful Riverfront park on the banks of the Cooper River. 
  • Summerville, which is partly in Dorchester County and partly in Charleston County,  is home to about 50,000 people, and it is the fastest-growing town in the county. It has a beautiful town square and is lovingly named the ‘Flower Town in the Pines’ for its abundance of greenery and blooms. 
  • If you like to spend time outdoors, consider the small town of Ridgeville. Home to many hiking trails and fantastic restaurants, you will never run out of things to do in this quaint town. It is also near the Edisto River Canoe and Francis Beidler Forest, where you can observe a variety of different birds and wildlife. 
  • Harleyville, St. George, and Reeseville are all charming towns located in Dorchester County and are very close to the Beidler Forest. This gorgeous swamp forest offers fun for the whole family, including private tours and activities for kids.
